A Workshop for Practitioners

'All Roads lead to the Critic' - addressing ‘Inner Critic’ modes is a key feature of a Schema Therapy based treatment. Such critic modes can be at the heart of a negative spiral of dysregulation; directing anger and shame towards the vulnerable child mode (potentially heightening vulnerability), whilst also motivating and energising any (blocking) coping modes. Traditionally, ST has asserted the need to harshly rebuke, or even banish so called 'punitive' critic modes, but recent debate (e.g. Brockman & Behary, 2023) and anecdotal evidence from clinicians suggests that a banishing approach can be limited or even counter-productive for a significant subset of patients. In this 1-day workshop, Rob will outline some theory as to why banishing some harsh punitive critics may lead to paradoxical effects, and outlines an assessment and intervention approach to help clinicians formulate and work with treatment resistant 'Inner Critics'.
